SOUTHER FELL, BLENCATHRA, MUNGRISDALE

COMMON, BANNERDALE CRAGS and

BOWSCALE FELL - 3rd August 2008

Mungrisdale - Souther Fell - Scales Tarn - Sharp Edge - Blencathra - Mungrisdale Common - Bannerdale Crags - Bowscale Fell - Mungrisdale

11 miles, 3000 feet of ascent

When I set off from Mungrisdale the cloud looked as if it was lower than forecast and the idea of crossing Sharp Edge in dense hill fog didn't really fill me with joy, but onwards and upwards!

The first fell of the day was Souther Fell...........

and then along the valley of the Glenderamackin

The bowl of Scales Tarn with Sharp Edge behind is a marvelous spot.

As height is gained the view down to Scales Tarn improves even more.

Fortunately the cloud that had hung over Sharp Edge disappeared.

Wow, Foule Crag is steep!

Now that's what I call timing. No sooner had I made it up to the top of Foule Crag than the cloud came back down.

My 150th Wainwright; Blencathra. Cause for a small pat on the back!

My 151st Wainwright, Mungrisdale Common. From the sublime to the ridiculous. The cloud was so low there was absolutely no point in taking a photograph especially as in my opinion MC is the worst fell of all 214 Wainwrights.

It was then on to Bannerdale Crags, but alas, still no view.

The final fell of the day was Bowscale Fell which has both a cairn and a wall-shelter. The wall-shelter is more photogenic!

Sharp Edge is simply superb and would be the highlight of virtually any walk. A must-do again!
