HELM CRAG, GIBSON KNOTT, CALF CRAG AND STEEL FELL - 28 JUNE 2008

Ghyll Foot - Helm Crag - Gibson Knott - Calf Crag - Steel Fell - Ghyll Foot.

6.75 miles, 2600 feet of ascent

The forecast for the day was pretty poor with showers likely to last well into the afternoon, which was a pity as I only had a short walk planned and would therefore more than likely be on the way home before it brightened up.

The classic shot of ''The Lion and the Lamb'' seen from the main road. Notice the heavy grey skies and yes, it was just starting to rain as I arrived in Grasmere.

There was plenty of water in Green Burn as I entered the valley.

Its a very simple and short walk up to Bracken Hause and the summit from this side.

Having retraced my steps to the ridge, the next target was Gibson Knott.

Next was Calf Crag and the weather had finally made its mind up.............it was definitely raining!

Despite the weather it is still a super view looking back to Gibson Knott and Helm Crag.

Having reached the top of Calf Crag there is an excellent view over to Brownrigg Moss and Greenup Edge. AW is right when he says that it is marshy leaving the summit. I'm surprised the iron fence posts haven't sunk!

Steel Fell was the final summit of the day. I love the dog's head on the top of the cairn!

This walk is perfect when you only have half a day to spare and even though the weather could have been better it certainly didn't spoil things.
