LOW FELL and FELLBARROW - 6 February 2008

Thackthwaite - Low Fell - Loweswater Fell - Low Fell - Sourfoot Fell - Smithy Fell - Fellbarrow - Thackthwaite.

5 miles, 1650 feet of ascent

The tops of Whiteside and Grasmoor were in cloud as I left the car at Thackthwaite at 12.15 and although there was some blue sky it was quite hazy. Not a particularly good day for taking photographs it has to be said.

It was also very windy and chilly as I reached the top of Low Fell.

It was definitely too cold to linger and so I retraced my steps towards the second objective of the day; Fellbarrow. As I skirted round Smithy Fell, the beautifully constructed zig-zags I had climbed earlier came into view.

The short pull up the side of the fence towards the top of Fellbarrow was soon completed

and I was able to look back from the barren top towards Low Fell and Mellbreak.

As I headed back down the drove road the cloud lifted a little and Gable could be seen with a touch of snow.

What an excellent motto for any fell-walker!

Four hours of driving to spend only two and a half hours on the fells. Was it worth it and will I do it again? As the Churchill Insurance dog says..........Oh yes.

Only 34 Wainwrights, 9 walks to go!!
